Serbia's SNS Win: the Serbian Progressive Party captures 130 of the 250 sea
Win With Irregularities
In December 2023, the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) secured victory in the parliamentary elections in Serbia, capturing 130 out of 250 seats and maintaining control of the legislature.
According to media reports, voting irregularities, including ballot box stuffing and the buying of votes, were noted by international observers.
In addition, protests organized by the opposition were held in hopes of a new election.
Continued Political Support for Ukraine
Serbia has shown political support for Ukraine and its territorial integrity, including joining the Kyiv-led Crimea platform.
In the UN, Serbia has consistently voted in favor of condemning Russia's annexation of Ukrainian regions, the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, and suspending Russia from the UN Human Rights Council.
However, Serbia's current government has refused to provide military support to the Ukrainian army.
The Complications of Popular Support of the Russian Military
Media reports note that the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has publicly reaffirmed Serbia's ongoing friendship with Russia.
Moreover, the current ruling party has not imposed any sanctions on Russia, nor does it have any plans to do so.
Although President Vučić reaffirmed that "no one can bypass the sanctions against Russia through the territory of Serbia," and that the country is "not making money from anyone's suffering during the war," some reports suggest that individuals and entities are still finding ways to circumvent Russian sanctions, particularly dual-use goods.
Media under SNS control has propagated allegations suggesting that Western media and actors are attempting to oust them from power.
